Program objective

The mission of Studies of Global Media and Journalism Program is to uphold the public interest by educating aspiring new journalists from varied economic, racial, and cultural backgrounds who will bring much-needed diversity to news rooms by helping journalists enhance their skills and find new paths to excellence. Our students and faculty are bound by a commitment to news reporting founded in the eternal verities of fairness, accuracy, and impartiality by working across a spectrum of identities, cultures, languages, and storytelling media.

About program

Our program provides students with a comprehensive understanding of journalism, its history, legal, and ethical aspects, its role as a driver and critic, and its broader social and economic impact. Additionally, students develop a wide range of professional skills, including but not limited to reporting, feature and editorial writing, editing, production, news curation, photography, videography, multi-platform publishing, and media management.

Students in this program learn to critically evaluate the relationship between media, the public, and policymakers during evolving events or issues, preparing them for careers with domestic or global organizations, think tanks, businesses, and government agencies. Our curriculum emphasizes the practices, values, and laws influencing political, cultural, social, and economic institutions globally. Students gain skills and practical knowledge of emerging issues, such as disinformation, digital inequity, surveillance, and censorship. Our courses examine the historical and contemporary transformation of media, covering topics like climate change, entrepreneurship, innovation, disinformation and information security, war and peace, human rights, and social movement in a global context.

The program offers students the opportunity to study diverse media forms and their influences on global societies under the guidance of distinguished faculty members who are active in the field worldwide. Students also have the chance to contribute to student magazines, publications, the daily student newspaper, and social media channels.

Upon completion of their studies, graduates have the opportunity to embark on diverse career paths within the fields of journalism and communication. These career paths encompass a wide array of roles, including but not limited to account management, art direction, audience engagement, audience development, audience research, business journalism, data analysis and visualization, digital content editing, digital strategy, documentary editing and producing, international journalism, investigative reporting, media planning, media production, magazine editing, mobile production, multimedia editing, news editing, photo editing, photography, podcasting, public relations, project management, product management, science communication, SEO strategy, social media producing, sports reporting, sports and entertainment promotion, strategic communication, television news reporting or production, television sports reporting or production, radio reporting and production, videography, website editing and writing.

Graduation requirement

Associate Degree Requirements

Completing 30 Credit with grade of C or better.

Bachelor Degree Requirements

Completing 120 Credit with grade of C or better including Capstone.

Master Degree Requirements

The successful fulfillment of 32 credits in 500-level courses with a grade of C or higher, including the
Capstone course, is required.
